Erika Aasa is a contemporary painter based in Estonia, whose work explores how people adapt to changing life circumstances and why similar experiences affect people in different ways.In her paintings, she deals with emotional states that lead to internal changes: tension, vulnerability, resistance, letting go and the development of inner strength.
Aasa's work is characterized by an intuitive painting style, expressive use of color and conscious layering of material. The layered painting process reflects the multi-level nature of human experience and memory and forms an integral part of her artistic thinking and self-expression.
Her works invite the viewer to reflect on change, resilience and the complexity of the human inner world.
Aasa has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and conducted various workshops.
In my practice, I explore human adaptation to changing circumstances and the internal shifts that accompany it. I am interested in moments when a person encounters something beyond their control and must find a new way to relate to themselves and the world around them. I am not interested in transformation as a final outcome, but in the process itself. I explore why similar experiences affect people differently and how tension, loss, uncertainty, and the need to let go of control shape a person’s ability to adapt. I see adaptability not as a measure of strength, but as a continuous inner movement whose direction is never predetermined.
In my work, the body is not an idealized form, but a carrier of inner experience and change. I paint in layers because this reflects the nature of human experience as I understand it. Just as memories and lived experiences remain within a person, previous layers remain partially visible in the paintings.
My painting process is based on a balance between spontaneity and control. I begin with an intuitive impulse and allow the work to develop through the process itself. In this way, the painting emerges through a dialogue between material, colour, and my own thoughts.
I aim to create works that do not offer the viewer a fixed interpretation, but invite reflection and deeper engagement. I am interested in moments of recognition — when a work can create a personal connection with the viewer’s own experiences, emotional states, or processes of change. For me, painting is not an answer, but a space where change becomes perceptible.
